APPLETON, N.Y. (WIVB) — One of Western New York’s sweetest festivals is less than one week away — and one local farm is eagerly anticipating the big event.
Bittner-Singer Orchards grows around 400 acres of tree fruit. Nestled right in the sweet spot of Niagara County are rows and rows of peaches.
“This is known as one of the best peach-growing areas in the country,” said Jim Bittner, Bittner-Singer Orchards partner. “Peaches are grown in Niagara County for two reasons. One, we’re close to Lake Ontario, which protects the trees in the wintertime. If it gets 10 below zero, we could lose next year’s crop; 15 below will kill the trees. We’re next to Lake Ontario, which doesn’t freeze … most winters we don’t even go below zero here along the lake.”…
