Niagara County Haz-Mat team responds to chemical plant flash fire

LOCKPORT, N.Y. — A flash fire at VanDeMark Chemical Company in Niagara County was quickly brought under control after employees extinguished the flames before firefighters arrived Friday evening.

According to the City of Lockport Fire Department, Niagara County Communications dispatched city crews to the commercial chemical facility around 6:30 p.m. Friday after reports of a fire involving Ethyl Centralite, a chemical powder.

When firefighters arrived at 1 North Transit Road, plant staff told them the fire had already been put out using a dry-chemical extinguisher. Officials entered the building to confirm and found no active flames or smoldering materials…
