City of Buffalo LIMITS the Way You Can Use Salt on Driveways + Sidewalks

Found it interesting that there is a law in Buffalo, New York, regarding using salt to clear off snow and ice, and the City of Buffalo limits how and how much salt you can use.

Salt is one of the most important things that you can have when it starts snowing in Western New York. The salt will break down the ice fairly fast, and it is mostly standard that people will have it at their house during the Winter months. However, the City of Buffalo has a very interesting specific law on using salt at your home.

What is the rule when it comes to using salt at your home in the City of Buffalo?

You CANNOT use salt as the primary method to get rid of snow. For instance, if you have 6 inches of snow, you can’t just throw a ton of salt on the snow to get rid of it. That would be considered a violation of the law in the City of Buffalo. According to the laws on e360 for the City of Buffalo:

No person shall use salt, lime or any deleterious substance to remove snow or ice from the sidewalks or paved portion of any street or public place or from the track or tracks of any street surface railroad, except upon curves, switches, turnouts and at street crossings…
