CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — The Cheektowaga Police Department is responding to renewed concerns about privacy and data use surrounding Flock Safety license plate reader technology.
Cheektowaga police began implementing Flock Safety cameras in 2022 as part of an effort to assist investigations involving serious crimes. The automated license plate readers capture images of vehicles, which can then be used by law enforcement to identify leads.
Recent reports, however, have raised questions about Flock Safety’s commitment to privacy. A report from a sister station in Denver alleges the company was entering partnerships with private investigation firms, prompting concern about how collected data could be accessed or shared.
