Remembering firefighters and civilians killed in deadly propane explosion

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Saturday marks 42 years since an explosion killed five Buffalo firefighters and two civilians.

On Dec. 27, 1983, fire crews responded to reports of a large propane leak at the intersection of North Division and Grosvenor streets. Seconds after a crew arrived, an explosion leveled the four-story building and damaged buildings that were several blocks away.

Dozens of others were injured in the explosion, which remains one of the deadliest incidents in the history of the Buffalo Fire Department. As in years past, the lives lost and the sacrifice of crews who responded continue to be remembered today.
