Wegmans using facial recognition technology in some stores

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Wegmans says it is using facial recognition technology in “a small fraction of [their] stores,” including in New York City, for safety reasons.

Retinal scans and voice prints are not collected, but facial recognition data is, the company said in a statement. The purpose of collecting the data is to identify individuals based on previous misconduct, criminal cases, or missing person cases.

“Like many retailers, we use camera to help identify individuals who pose a risk to our people, customers, or operation,” Wegmans said. “In New York City, we comply with local requirements by posting the mandated signage to notify customers about the technology.”…
