Videos filmed around Buffalo in upstate New York have captured thundersnow, a rare and dramatic winter weather phenomenon that has emerged during a major storm sweeping across the Northeast.
One video, posted by Rich Pawlewski (@pawlew3), was recorded on January 21 at 9:54 p.m. local time in Marilla, New York, a town just east of Buffalo. The clip captures a heavy snowstorm rolling through the area, accompanied by lightning and thunder. Its caption reads: “Lucky to catch one of nature’s most amazing phenomenon.”
Pawlewski told Newsweek: “Thundersnow does happen in WNY [Western New York] at least once a year…it’s just rare to get it on video because it’s very random. During this storm, there were a few strikes of lightning during this snow squall…”…
