Some veterans with service-related disabilities to receive property tax exemptions

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Some veterans with service-related disabilities will receive full exemptions on their property taxes after the Buffalo Common Council passed a resolution this week.

The common council passed the resolution on Tuesday for veterans that meet certain criteria. In order to qualify, veterans must meet all of the below criteria:

  • A 100% disability rating with a total and permanent designation from the VA
  • Have a total disability based on individual unemployment from the VA
  • Qualify for the VA’s specially adapted housing grant
  • Have either an honorable discharge or a qualifying condition under state services law including:
    • PTSD
    • Traumatic brain injury
    • Military sexual trauma
    • Discharged LGBT veteran

The decision comes months after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation that gives the authority to local governments to opt into tax exemption for disabled veterans.

The legislation will return to the common council after it is drafted as local law. It is unclear when exactly the exemptions will take effect, but it will need to be formally approved by the council.
