Upshur Co. deputies arrest suspected scammer from New York

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (WBOY) – Upshur County deputies arrested a suspected scammer from New York during an arranged money pickup.

On Friday, Feb. 20, Sheriff Michael Coffman was dispatched to a local bank during a fraud investigation, according to a press release. Coffman then notified the West Virginia Attorney General’s office investigator about the scam.

Following this, Coffman contacted Chief Deputy Theron Caynor to respond to the scene. The sheriff’s office made phone contact with the scammers and arranged a money pickup, the release states. Other deputies then assisted as the agency waited for the scammers to arrive in Upshur County to collect the money.

Sgt. Tyler Gordon waited at the pickup location, while Coffman and Caynor were nearby to intervene and take the vehicle occupants into custody. However, the scammers contacted the victim again to reschedule the pickup for Feb. 21, according to the press release.

The scammer arrived at the pickup location and was taken into custody without incident, according to the release. During a search of the vehicle, deputies recovered more than $130,000 in cash, gold coins and electronic devices.
