Amazon has announced that it will be closing a portion of one of its facilities in Lancaster.

According to the Buffalo News, Amazon will be closing just a portion of one of its facilities in Lancaster, NY, at 4201 Walden Ave. The sortation portion will be closing. However, the rest of the facility that still takes Amazon returns will remain open and functional.

“We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and improves the experience for our employees, customers and partners. As part of our effort to modernize our network we sometimes exit buildings, and we weigh a variety of factors when making these decisions.” – spokeswoman Amber Plunkett

When will it close?

They anticipate the facility will close by the end of May. In the meantime, they will move operations to other, more efficient facilities here in Western New York. They’ve got sortation facilities in Hamburg, the Town of Tonawanda, Pembroke, and two in Rochester.

What will happen to the workers?

Normally when you hear about news like this, it’s followed by statements of how many workers are being laid off following the move. However, it appears as though they’re hoping to be able to move them to other jobs within the company. There are over 540 workers who will be affected by the closing and they’re hoping they can move them to the returns facility, or to another sorting facility in the area…
