Malfunction Leads to Fire at Cereal Plant

A fire broke out at the General Mills factory in Buffalo, New York, Monday, when an equipment malfunction sent Lucky Charms cereal ingredients onto the roof where a hot exhaust unit ignited.

Around 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, thick, white smoke emanated from the roof and windows. Flames were not visible, but crews were up on the roof and around the factory. One firefighter said they got a call for a pile of cereal that was on fire.

Buffalo Battalion Chief Sean Eagen said they contained the fire to a six-foot by six-foot section of the east side of the 10-story building’s roof. They were able to extinguished in minutes…
