Niagara County Clerk alerts residents of traffic summons scam

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski is warning residents of a new scam involving fake traffic summonses that give drivers the option to either pay a fine or appear in court.

The summons is accompanied by a QR code to send a payment and appears to come from the New York State Supreme Court as a notice for a toll violation hearing. Jastrzemski said there are no reports of the scam occurring in Niagara County, and clerks in other parts of the state made him aware of the fraud.

“This summons looks very real and people in other parts of the state have already been duped,” Jastrzemski said in a release. He noted the similarity of this scam to an E-ZPass scam county officials warned of last year.

The E-ZPass scam often contains a link sent through a text message aimed at collecting tolls for “NY Toll Services” or “E-ZPass Toll Services.”…
