8 officers assaulted at Collins Correctional Facility

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Eight correction officers were injured in attacks by inmates in two separate incidents this month at Collins Correctional Facility, according to the union that represents the officers.

In both incidents, the union said officers suffered multiple injuries and needed medical care. Union officials say attacks on officers are becoming more frequent, partly due to the Halt Act, which limits solitary confinement to 15 days.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision issued the following statement, saying in part, “Commissioner Martuscello acknowledges the challenges staff face day in and day out to keep our facilities and communities safe,” adding, “The safety of all who enter our facilities is a top priority, which is why Commissioner Daniel Martuscello and DOCCS has taken decisive, proactive action to strengthen policies and practices that ensure a correctional system that is safe for staff, incarcerated individuals, and community members.”
