11 accused of selling fake temporary license plates as part of multi-million dollar scheme

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Eleven people from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Florida and Pennsylvania have been charged with selling more than 100,000 fake temporary license plates to allow people to evade tolls and parking tickets for nearly a decade, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

The people in the group are accused of creating a series of dealerships in New Jersey and Georgia and selling the temporary tags to more than 100,000 people at prices between $50 and $250 since 2017.

The investigation found a total of more than $15 million worth of unpaid parking tickets, tolls and vehicle registrations were tied to the scheme. Many of the temporary tags were tied to addresses in southern New York. The tags saw a total of around $11.8 million in unpaid parking and traffic tickets in New York City, as well as $3.1 million in unpaid tolls across the state…
