FORT MYERS, Fla. —
The Gulf Coast News Storm Team is tracking Tropical Storm Fay and a new area of interest.
Tropical Storm Fay
Tropical Storm Fay is expected to transition to a post-tropical cyclone Tuesday. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, Fay is barely clinging to tropical storm status with winds sustained at 40 mph. The storm is moving to the southwest at 9 mph.
Dry air and wind shear continue to take a toll on Fay and the storm is expected to dissipate by Friday.
Tropical Storm Fay nearly became the first hurricane of the season, but sustained winds only peaked at 70 mph. Sustained winds need to reach 74 mph or greater for a storm to be classified as a hurricane.
This hurricane season has broken the record for the latest first hurricane of a season, which was previously set on September 11.
Eastern Atlantic
A tropical wave is forecast to move off the coast of Africa by Wednesday. While the odds for tropical development are 0% over the next two days, there is a 30% chance of development over the next seven days.
