Whether you enjoy golfing, boating, gardening, relaxing at the beach or simply spending time outdoors, protecting yourself from the sun is essential for your health. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays comes with serious risks — and since July is UV Safety Awareness Month, it’s a great time to remind you about sun safety.
There are three types of UV radiation: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA and UVB rays penetrate the atmosphere and can cause long-term damage, including premature skin aging, wrinkles and an increased risk of skin cancer. UVC rays are absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and don’t reach the surface.
While enjoying the outdoors, the Lee Health team reminds you to:
- Protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Even on cloudy days, sunscreen is necessary — and be sure to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating. Hats and protective clothing offer extra protection from the sun’s harmful rays.
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Prolonged sun exposure can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and even eye cancers.
- Practice sun-safe habits, such as seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. until 4 p.m.) and staying well-hydrated.
