New traffic light on Pine Island Road: good, bad news for Cape Coral residents

Decisions surrounding the Florida Department of Transportation’s intersection construction project on Pine Island Road in Cape Coral have left some Cape Coral commuters frustrated and confused.

While many applaud a new light being added, making the intersection safer, some are still waiting for the day that left-hand turns onto Pine Island Road from Skyline Boulevard and SW 10th Place are possible.

Details of the Pine Island Road construction in Cape Coral

The project, which began its construction in Aug. 2024, will finish by sometime this summer. It spans 2.2 miles of Pine Island Road and the cost projection is about $10 million. FDOT says that the expansion will improve safety and efficiency.

The project scope includes:

  • Milling and resurfacing to increase road longevity and improve motorist’s drive
  • Widening of roadways
  • Updated signalization and signage
  • New turn lanes

One point of contention for many citizens is the lack of a left-hand turn lane onto Pine Island Road from Skyline Boulevard and SW 10th Place. Many wanted a fully signalized intersection, with both left and right turn lanes. FDOT considered this, but went in a different direction…
