Man who helped save girl from Boca Grande shark attack changes plea in traffic stop

A man who helped save a 9-year-old girl from a shark attack told a judge he understood he faces deportation as he changed his plea in a traffic infraction days after the heroic rescue.

Luis Omar Alvarez, 30, of Lehigh Acres, on Aug. 27 pleaded no contest to driving without a valid driver’s license. He was placed in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention at the Collier County Jail after his June 15 first court appearance.
