Headaches of homeownership becoming too much for seniors

Mother Nature is causing quite a stir in Southwest Florida’s real estate market. Hurricanes have caused billions of dollars in damage – along with endless headaches and stress – forcing many residents to reconsider their living situation.

Some are packing up and leaving Florida, while others are rebuilding. For many seniors, though, neither one is an acceptable option. Instead, they’re eyeing Seneca at Oak Creek, a vibrant 55+ rental community in North Fort Myers developed by Sage Communities.

Jane Hillabrant is among those who transitioned from home ownership to renting. Hurricane Ian in September 2022 destroyed Hillabrant’s dream along with thousands of homes and businesses across Southwest Florida. Hillabrant safely evacuated the region, but before returning, she texted a neighbor to inquire about the status of her house. The neighbor’s succinct response was shocking: “I’m sorry.”…
