On Thursday, Sept. 11, fifth-grade students from Kingsway Elementary will be at the Military Heritage Museum for a field trip featuring a special rotation station about 9/11 Heroes’ Day.
Thanks to the generosity of the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation, this standards-aligned and fun-filled day is an experience all of the Charlotte County grade 5 students enjoy as they experience many engaging stations planned for the day. Students experience flight simulators, virtual reality, a 3-D movie, kids’ documentary, directed gallery exploration and a history-focused iPad game, in addition to the special Heroes’ Day station.
This field trip and the station on 9/11 align with the spirit and intent of Florida Statute 683.335. This statute designates Sept. 11 as “9/11 Heroes’ Day” to honor those who perished in the 2001 terror attacks, requiring that the day be observed in public schools. While the statute specifically mandates historical instruction for middle and high school students, we believe it is equally vital to introduce this important day to our younger students in an age-appropriate and meaningful way…
