13 tons of uncollected daily dog waste in Lee County puts SW Florida waterways at risk

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Lee County Government is encouraging residents to pick up their pets’ waste because of the impact on lawns, waterways and wildlife.

According to the county government, pet waste is natural, but it is high in nitrogen and phosphorus content. That content can contribute to noxious algae blooms, depleting oxygen from the water and harming animals in the area.

The county said more than 13 tons of dog waste are not properly disposed of every day. According to Lee County Ordinance 14-22, residents have to remove pet waste if they are not on their own property…
