CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Cape Coral man has been sentenced to federal prison for his involvement in a firearm trafficking conspiracy, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
According to court records, Derick Desir, 28, joined a conspiracy to “straw purchase” handguns on behalf of others in May 2022. A straw purchase is when someone buys a gun for a person who cannot otherwise legally buy one for themselves.
Desir purchased approximately 12 handguns in June 2022, claiming to firearm dealers that he was the actual buyer while knowing that they would be trafficked to Canada by others. At least five of these handguns have been recovered by Canadian law enforcement…
