Jaycee Park reimagined, community voices mixed

The Jaycee Park project in Cape Coral is in full swing. The fenced-in construction site is filled with the sounds of beeping dump trucks and the humming of heavy equipment. Workers in neon vests move quickly and with purpose.

A stark contrast to the rest of this quiet neighborhood along Beach Parkway in South Cape. The calm waves of the Caloosahatchee serve to drown out the construction noise at the River Towers Condominiums, less than a half a mile from the Jaycee Park site. There, seasonal resident MaryAnn Kies, who splits her time between Illinois and Cape Coral, enjoys a sunny November day outside.

“I’ll miss the old park,” Kies said. “But I’ll use the new park.”

Kies says she loves having Jaycee Park so close to her condo and used to spend a lot of time walking there. She said she enjoyed the park’s natural beauty, especially the shade provided by all of the trees that once stood tall around the park…
