From the Archives: The Hendrys – One of Fort Myers first families

Note:The following is excerpts from an April 11, 2015, article in the News-Press entitled “Members of singular Florida family reunite” by Amy Bennett Williams.

It’s hardly surprising that Francis Asbury Hendry has his own Wikipedia page. He came to Florida in a covered wagon as an 18-year-old in 1851 and died one of its most influential residents in 1917.

Cattle king, Confederate captain and county commissioner, Hendry also served two terms in the Florida Senate and six in the House, where he championed Everglades drainage. He also sired 11 children, eight of whom survived to adulthood and went on to provide the captain a passel of grandchildren…
