Christmas display at Edison Ford
Visiting the Edison Ford Estate this Saturday evening, we were saddened to find that, in order to view the schoolchildren’s decorated trees, an admission charge was required. I recognize that maintaining the estate and operating this event are not without significant cost. However, I believe that many families of school kids who created these beautiful displays may be discouraged from spending more than $50 to enjoy seeing their efforts. It would seem to me much fairer to have the trees displayed in the public portion of the grounds on the east side of McGregor Boulevard.

Alligator Alcatraz: A national disgrace
When I shared with a friend that I was going to join the weekly interfaith prayer vigil outside the entrance of Alligator Alcatraz in Florida, they remarked, “I thought that had been shut down.” Unfortunately, many people do not realize that an appeals court overturned the order to close the detention center. Due to lack of public knowledge or indifference, we as a nation are allowing this inhumane treatment to continue while Alligator Alcatraz remains open.
While at the prayer vigil we heard from eight religious leaders from different faiths; members of the Miccosukee tribe whose land has been taken to build the facility; teenagers who cry out for justice; and relatives of the detainees. All are calling out for due process for all, and to stop the abducting, detaining and disappearing of their neighbors. They are asking that this detention center be shut down and that the cruelty ends…
