FORT MYERS, Fla. — We all have that one friend we would never take advice from, but what if, just once, we listened, and it actually worked? That question lies at the heart of “ADVICE,” written by Brent Askari and currently playing at Florida Repertory Theatre.
The show is sharply written, though its full impact didn’t land for me until the final moments. What initially seems like a clever comedy slowly reveals itself to be something far more piercing. “ADVICE” has bite, insight, and just enough discomfort to make you re-examine yourself.
At the center of the play are Ron and Joy, a couple who appear to have their lives neatly together. As the story unfolds, however, cracks begin to show in that carefully constructed façade. Their anniversary dinner is interrupted by the arrival of Gary, a longtime “dorky” friend who has reinvented himself as a self-help guru and is eager to unveil his new book…
