Giving pets a merry Christmas

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter (CCAS) in Cape Coral, Florida, will once again turn Christmas Day into a moment of joy and comfort for its shelter residents. Beginning at 1 p.m. on Christmas Day, staff and volunteers will deliver wrapped presents, special meals and extra love to every cat and dog currently in the shelter.

Since opening its doors in 2020, CCAS has helped more than 6,000 unwanted, abandoned and neglected animals find loving homes. While the shelter works tirelessly to ensure every animal is adopted as quickly as possible, some cats and dogs will still be waiting for their forever families on Christmas Day. For those animals, CCAS is committed to making sure the holiday is filled with warmth, compassion, and fun!

Each shelter resident will receive a special gift, enjoy a holiday meal, and be surrounded by caring hands and gentle voices—reminders that they are not forgotten and that they are deeply loved, even as they wait for the families who will one day call them their own.

“I am adopted—born in December and adopted in January by a wonderful family. I spent my first Christmas in an orphanage,” said Liz McCauley, Executive Director of the Cape Coral Animal Shelter. “When I became involved in animal rescue, it brought me back to that first Christmas. Making Christmas Day special for animals who are alone has become very personal and very important to me. Our staff and volunteers grow incredibly attached to the animals in our care, and seeing them enjoy toys, treats, and attention on Christmas Day brings us so much joy. Even on a holiday, it’s essential to us that they feel like they already belong to a family.”…
