New sentencing trial underway for convicted murderer Dwight Eaglin

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WWSB) – A 50‑year‑old already serving a life sentence for murder was back in a Charlotte County courtroom Monday where he could face the death penalty.

Dwight Eaglin was sentenced to life for a 1998 murder at a St. Petersburg strip club. In 2003, Eaglin killed a prison guard and another inmate in a failed escape attempt from Charlotte Correctional Institution in Punta Gorda.

A jury originally sentenced Eaglin to die in 2006 for the prison murders, voting 8–4 in favor of death; however after that vote, Florida law was changed requiring a unanimous jury vote for a death sentence…
