Eaglin re-sentencing trial continues in Day Two with testimony from prison witnesses

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Testimony resumed this afternoon in the re-sentencing trial of former boxer Dwight Eaglin, who was convicted of killing a prison guard during an escape attempt. Eaglin was originally sentenced to death, but changes in Florida’s death penalty law earned him a chance at re-sentencing.

This morning’s testimony focused on a former inmate at the Punta Gorda prison where the incident occurred. The former prisoner said he was asked to participate in the June 11 attempted escape but declined.

When asked by the prosecutor why he didn’t join the escape attempt, he said, “I had a chance to get out the right way.”…
