Impressive bald eagle protects its prey at Fort Myers golf course

Southwest Florida is full of wildlife surprises. You just have to be in the right place at the right time to see some of the spectacular scenes.

One of those amazing moments occurred at the Myerlee Country Club in Fort Myers on Jan. 31. Along the eighth fairway of the popular golf course, an eagle was on watch making sure there weren’t any other birds or animals thinking of stealing the fish it had caught in a nearby pond.

In the video at the top of this page, taken from a golf cart, you cane see one bird stalking the eagle in the background, but it quickly flew off when it was alarmed by the moving vehicle.

Bald eagles in Florida: What to know

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website, Florida has one of the densest concentrations of nesting bald eagles in the lower 48 states, with an estimated 1,500 nesting pairs. Concentrations of nesting territories are clustered around several significant lake, river, and coastal systems throughout the state. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has monitored the population of nesting bald eagles in Florida since 1972…
