Shelter puts county on notice to end contract

PORT CHARLOTTE — The Animal Welfare League notified Charlotte County officials this week it intends to terminate its agreement to house animals for the county.

The county and the nonprofit animal shelter’s current agreement to house and care for animals was reached back in 2013. The AWL’s letter states the shelter agreement will terminate in nine months, on Nov. 30.

The letter, delivered to county officials Wednesday, states the AWL remains open to negotiate. Charlotte County officials have said they are open to negotiate, too…
