Sanibel embraces island time with “Slow Down Sanibel” campaign

Life on Sanibel has always moved at a different pace. With winding two-lane roads, beautiful scenery, and a laid-back island lifestyle, the community has long embraced the idea that enjoying the ride and getting there safely is more important than getting there quickly. A new public safety initiative, “Slow Down Sanibel”, is reminding drivers that taking it easy on the road helps protect the people and wildlife that make the island so special.

The Slow Down Sanibel campaign is a community education effort focused on encouraging drivers to follow posted speed limits and be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife that frequently cross island roadways. With many residents and visitors walking, biking, and exploring the island outdoors, slowing down behind the wheel is critical to keeping everyone safe.

Sanibel Police Chief Bill Dalton says the campaign reflects a shared community commitment to safety.

“Sanibel is a place where people are outside enjoying the island every day, whether they’re walking, biking, or simply taking in the natural beauty,” said Dalton. “Slowing down is a simple way every driver can help protect our neighbors, our visitors and the wildlife that make Sanibel unique. This campaign is about working together as a community to keep our roads safe.”…
