Englewood Man Identified After Deputy-Involved Shooting

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man shot and killed by a deputy during an April 1 response on Barker Avenue in Englewood as 52-year-old Keith Dwayne Blevins. Deputies say they were called to a home after reports of an armed person, moved other residents out of the house to safety, and fired when a man came out holding a gun and refused to drop it. Deputies and EMS started CPR, but Blevins died at the scene.

Sheriff’s office names suspect

The sheriff’s office released Blevins’ identity on Monday, naming the 52-year-old as the man involved in the shooting, according to Gulf Coast News. The brief statement did not identify the deputy who opened fire or offer additional details about what led up to the encounter outside the home.

What deputies say happened

Sheriff’s officials told WWSB that deputies were responding to multiple calls about a domestic disturbance and a person being held at gunpoint. According to the station, deputies were able to remove other residents from the home before the shooting, and first responders attempted life-saving measures after the deputy fired.

Neighbors describe the scene

Neighbors told Gulf Coast News they heard three to five shots, then saw crime-scene tape and a mobile command center set up on Barker Avenue near Strawberry Street. Residents said the block is usually quiet and that they had never seen anything like the heavy law-enforcement presence that followed.
