School District of Lee County superintendent defends $47 million budget cuts amid protests

FORT MYERS, Fla. — School District of Lee County Superintendent Denise Carlin discussed proposed $47 million budget cuts during a conference at the district headquarters, where she was joined by Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas.

Kamoutsas and Carlin discussed preserving programs like arts and sports while making changes to align resources with student enrollment and redirect funds back into classrooms.

Outside the district headquarters, demonstrators gathered to voice concerns about how the cuts could affect arts programs, teacher positions and other resources for students.
