Detectives searching for a 22-year-old man wanted on an outstanding warrant instead found him armed with a firearm fitted with a high-capacity drum magazine, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The discovery, made by detectives with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force, led to his arrest on a preliminary charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and a follow-up search that turned up two more guns inside his apartment.
Per IMPD News, task force detectives had been trying to locate the man on an outstanding buccal warrant, a court order that authorizes police to collect a DNA sample from a suspect’s cheek via a cotton swab, which under Indiana Code § 10-13-6-10 is used to compare evidence against crime scenes or add a profile to the state’s DNA database, according to Justia Law. When detectives found him, they observed that he was armed with a firearm equipped with a drum magazine, IMPD says. Because the man was prohibited from possessing firearms, that observation gave detectives immediate probable cause to request a search warrant for his residence, which a judge granted.
Search Turns Up Two More Firearms
ICGTF detectives took the 22-year-old into custody and, once the search warrant was granted, investigators located two firearms inside the apartment along with the drum magazine, per the same IMPD account.
