INDIANAPOLIS – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Indiana Youth Institute is encouraging adults to check in with the teens in their lives.
The group says teen well-being is on the decline in Indiana. Nearly 30% of Hoosier students in grades 7 through 12 report feeling sad or hopeless for at least two consecutive weeks — a sign they may have stopped doing the things they enjoy. Even more alarming, about 14% have seriously considered suicide.
“We want every child to feel hopeful about their futures,” said Tami Silverman of the Indiana Youth Institute. “When a child is contemplating, considering, or planning to take their own lives — that’s something we all need to pay high attention to.”…
