Fan Fights Prompt Extra Patrols Downtown

INDIANAPOLIS –– Police in Indianapolis are preparing for larger crowds and asking for calm after recent confrontations between Pacers and Knicks fans ahead of Thursday night’s Game 5 watch party at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says tensions between fans have been visible both online and in person. A few videos posted on social media show fans arguing outside downtown bars. In one video, a group confronts a Pacers fan, and one person appears to pull out a gun during the exchange.

“We are an open carry state and that is a long gun and that is allowable under state law,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson. “It’s the actions you take with a firearm. It’s the criminal actions you take with those firearms.”…
