INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A powerful Juneteenth celebration happened Thursday in the heart of Indianapolis, honoring Black history, resilience and freedom through film, music and storytelling.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Juneteenth celebration at the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library on Indiana Avenue kicked off with a panel discussion and public screening of the 1995 war drama “The Tuskegee Airmen,” a movie that honored the Black aviators who battled racism abroad and at home.
