INDIANAPOLIS — Three new billboards in Indianapolis criticize the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The billboards, which read “Fund our future — don’t force us apart,” ask Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forrestal to stop cooperating with ICE. The billboards are located at 3115 Madison Ave., 5780 Sunnyside Rd. and 3654 Lafayette Rd.
LiveFree Indiana, the organization behind the billboards, held an event Tuesday afternoon as the billboards went up. During the event, LiveFree Indiana’s leadership accused the sheriff’s office allowing financial incentives that come with ICE collaboration to dictate its decision-making.
“As both an organizer and former employee in the release lobby of the jail, it’s clear the facility is already in crisis with reports of poor medical care, bad drinking water, and mistreatment of folks who are incarcerated,” Dewayne Whitney with the Validus Movement said via press release. “Let’s be clear, the jail is already a broken system and the Sheriff using it to house detainees for ICE is purely to put profits over people.”…
