The Indiana Department of Health has confirmed that mosquitoes in 27 Hoosier counties have tested positive for West Nile virus. The health organization has also reported that one Indiana resident has tested positive, marking the first human case of the virus in 2025.
So far in 2025, the Indiana Department of Health has tested 955 mosquito pools across the state. Of those, mosquitoes from 128 pools have tested positive for West Nile.

First Human Case Confirmed in Southern Indiana
While many of the positive pools have been found in Central Indiana, one human case of West Nile has been confirmed in Southern Indiana in Vanderburgh County. At this time, there is no additional information regarding the human case of West Nile virus.
West Nile Virus Symptoms and Risks
Most commonly, West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of the virus in humans can include headache, body aches, and fever, as well as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. At this time, there are no known medicines to treat West Nile.
