Bobcat Fever on the Rise in Southern Indiana

Local veterinarians are sounding the alarm about a potentially deadly feline disease.

Bobcat Fever is spreading in Southern Indiana, presenting a serious danger to domestic cats. The disease is passed by parasites (Cytauxzoon felis) that target the blood and tissues of felines. The parasites are carried by ticks, generally lone star ticks that are prevalent in the region, which then pass the infection on to the cat.

Symptoms can include loss of appetite, lethargy, high fever, trouble breathing, and even seizures. Conditions can rapidly deteriorate, including vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Infected cats can also show signs of anemia and jaundice…
