‘We can’t take it anymore’ | Gov. Braun appoints official to fight utility rate hikes in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Mike Braun has appointed a new official and tasked them with finding ways to save money for Indiana’s utility ratepayers.

Hoosiers have seen electric bills going up for years. According to the Indiana Citizen’s Action Coalition, the average bill went up by 17.5% in the last year. That’s an extra $28 a month on average.

“We can’t take it anymore,” Braun said in a written statement. “I am directing the Utility Consumer Counselor, who is Indiana’s ratepayer advocate, to evaluate utilities profits along with other cost savings measures to ease the burden on ratepayers. I would also like to see the utilities’ investors bear more of the cost of doing business.”

Multiple Indiana electric companies have asked for further rate hikes. Some of the reasons are increased construction and transmission projects. AES is facing pushback as it seeks to raise rates in central Indiana by another $21 a month, on average…
