Deadly drug showing up more often in Indiana

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – A deadly drug trend is worrying Indiana health officials.

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid. It’s 100 times stronger than fentanyl and it’s starting to show up more in Indiana street drugs.

The Indiana Department of Health tracks carfentanil in returned syringes and toxicology results from overdose deaths. From 2021 to 2023, detections were in the single digits. But this year, the number of positive samples has spiked.
