Dashcam shows IMPD officer shot while trying to detain group of suspects

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis police officer survived being shot four times after a gun was pulled on him while trying to detain multiple individuals. Fortunately, the officer wasn’t seriously injured, thanks in part to his ballistic vest.

Previous stories detail how 19-year-old Tyson Reach opened fire on an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer while the officer was outnumbered four-to-one during an attempted carjacking arrest. Now, dashcam footage released by IMPD reveals the entire shootout.

One of the suspects, 20-year-old Mandrell Ballard, immediately fled the scene the moment the stolen vehicle stopped near Emrich Drive and N. White River Parkway W. on July 29. Three others — 19-year-old Mahki Starks (the driver), 19-year-old Malique Starks (a passenger) and Reach — then all exit the vehicle and attempt to walk away.
