Terminally-ill Westfield boy once again covered by Medicaid after denial of care scare

WESTFIELD, Ind. — A Westfield family is breathing a sigh of relief knowing their terminally ill son’s care will be covered by Medicaid.

Katarina and Brian Nelson got a letter late October saying their 4-year-old son Wesley would be denied Medicaid benefits — the same care he had qualified for years prior. The devastating news came after a representative from Medicaid partner Maximus evaluated Wesley and his level of required care.

Wesley has a terminal disease called Hunter Syndrome, where a buildup of cellular waste causes organ and tissue damage. As the Nelsons worked to care for and take Wesley to his weekly appointments over the last month or so, they were also compiling countless reports to include in an appeal against the denial…
