Several new laws to take effect in Indiana and Michigan on New Year’s Day

(WNDU) – The new year means some new laws in Indiana and Michigan, as several new laws will go into effect on January 1, 2026.

Here’s a look at some of the key new laws that will go into effect:

INDIANA

SNAP Restrictions

Indiana’s new “Smart SNAP” initiative will restrict sugary drinks and candy from SNAP benefit purchases. Soda, energy drinks, sports drinks like Gatorade and sweetened iced tea are no longer supported, according to WFIE.

Data Privacy Rights

Hoosiers will gain new data privacy rights under a law requiring businesses to be transparent about how consumer data is collected and used.

According to the IndyStar, the law allows residents to request copies of their data, request deletion and opt out of targeted advertising. Companies must respond to consumer data requests in a timely manner.

Property Tax Deduction Increase

Property tax changes will phase out the standard $48,000 homeowner deduction while gradually increasing the supplemental percentage-based deduction to reduce tax burdens on homeowners, the IndyStar reports.

Income Tax Decrease

The state income tax will decrease from 3% to 2.95% as part of a multi-year tax cut plan.

Vehicle color changes
