Earthjustice warns NIPSCO to not pass on coal plant reopening costs to customers

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (WFFT) — Earthjustice has warned Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) against passing the costs of repairing a broken coal unit at the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station onto customers. The environmental group argues that a recent federal emergency order does not lawfully require major repairs and any spending related to an unlawful directive would be “imprudent.”

Although it’s a natural gas-only company in much of the WFFT viewing area, NIPSCO is an electricity provider for much northern indiana, including parts of the Warsaw and Nappanee area.

This warning from Earthjustice follows a U.S. Department of Energy emergency order issued on December 23, 2025, directing NIPSCO and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) to ensure Schahfer Units 17 and 18 remain operational through March 23, 2026…
