Southern Indiana man sets record for amount of winning catches in DNR’s Fish of the Year program

GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A southern Indiana man is reeling in fishing records, and his son is following in his footsteps.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Fish of the Year (FOTY) program tracks the longest fish of each species caught in a year. Steven Kellet, a dentist in Greene County’s city of Linton, set a record for the number of winning catches at 17. The previous record had stood since 2022 at 15 winning FOTY catches, set by Liu He of West Lafayette.

Kellett’s record-breaking catches for species that are most commonly pursued by anglers included a 25.5-inch channel catfish he caught at Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area, a 22.25-inch saugeye from the Whitewater River in Franklin, and a 21.5-inch brown trout from a private pond in Greene County, the DNR shared.

To make the new record even more special, Kellett’s 9-year-old son, Landon, also had five winning FOTY catches.

Landon’s biggest wins included a 28-inch black buffalo from the Wabash River in Sullivan County and an 18.5-inch shorthead redhorse from the Tippecanoe River in White County, according to the DNR…
