NIPSCO admits to overcharging more than 3,500 customers after new metering technology rollout

INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) – More than 3,500 NIPSCO customers were overcharged double their actual natural gas usage following the company’s rollout of a new metering system, according to filings from the state’s utility watchdog.

NIPSCO has been installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, since March 2024. The company said the technology allows it to read meters remotely.

State filings indicate the new system resulted in incorrect billings for more than 3,500 customers, who were charged double their actual gas usage…
