Carmel PD: Caregiver stole thousands from 87-year-old; bought tickets to Mexico

CARMEL, Ind. — An in-home caregiver is accused of stealing nearly $30,000 from an 87-year-old Carmel woman whom she was caring for, allegedly using the victim’s credit card to purchase airline tickets for getaways to Mexican beaches.

Adula Valdivia, 49, of Indianapolis, faces 19 criminal counts, including 13 counts of theft as a Level 6 felony and one count of fraud as a Level 5 felony.

ISP: Man stole nearly $1 million from his grandmother

According to court documents, Valdivia was employed by Visiting Angels and had been working for the victim since 2020 as an in-home health care assistant. The victim’s niece had been suspicious of Valdivia for a few years but contacted police in November about possible elder fraud.

According to the niece, she became suspicious after noticing her elderly aunt had far more credit card debt than seemed likely, since her aunt rarely went anywhere or spent money…
